OFFICIAL VICTORIAN CANINE COUNCIL CONTROLLED EVENTS:
RETRIEVING TRIALS:
A Retrieving Trial is an event at which competitions are held for any registered Gundog including German Shorthaired Poin ters.
Their game retrieving abilities are thoroughly tested on land, in water
and across water to determine their relative merits. The event
emulates where possible conditions which would be found whilst hunting
and game usually refers to euthanased feral pigeons.
There are
four levels increasing in complexity: Beginners, Novice,
Restricted and All Age. Where ever possible these events are held
within a reasonable distance of Melbourne with approximately sixteen
weekends of trialing each year.

A Utility Gundog
Field Trial is an event which is a competition for any registered
Utility Gundog including German Shorthaired pointers. Field
Trials are conducted in Victoria from the end of April until the end of
June during the quail hunting season. German Shorthaired
pointers are expected to hunt fur and feather and both can be
encountered at a trial. From time to time, trials are conducted
on exotic species: pheasant and partridge. Dogs are worked in a
brace under the control of a Judge and Steward in normal hunting
conditions. There are approximately five weekends of
trialing each year.

CONFORMATION SHOWS:
Conformation
shows are held to ensure that our GSPs conform to the original German
Breed Standard. This Standard was developed by Breed Wardens in Germany
to make sure that only the best dogs which are sound and fit are used
for breeding and hunting.
The breeder of your puppy may
consider it to be of show quality and encourage you to enter a
conformation show. At a show the dog will be assessed by a qualified ju dge
in regard to its appearance, attitude and movement, and compared to
other dogs of the same breed and of a similar age. Your dog will be
expected to run around a small roped off area on a lead and to be
'stood up' for the judge to run their hands over and assess.
As
your pup grows older and more experienced in the show ring it may
qualify for a Challenge Certificate by beating every other German
Shorthaired Pointer of its own sex on the day. After 100 points have
been earned your dog is awarded its Australian Champion Dog title and a
new registration certificate is issued with the title recorded. A dog
can become a Grand Champion by winning 1000 points, equal to becoming a
Champion ten times over.
OBEDIENCE:
Obedience
Trials are open to any registered dog. The idea of Obedience Trials is
to demonstrate the usefulness of the dog as the companion and guardian
of man. Trials are run in Victoria from March through to November, with
trials running most weekends during that time. There are four levels,
increasing in complexity: Encouragement, Novice, Open, Utility.
(Changes to these levels will occur after July 2006). Trials are
conducted by Obedience Clubs and also some Breed Clubs which run
Restricted Trials, eg. Gundogs. Dogs are tested individually,
under the control of a Judge, and then also in a group for stays.

AGILITY/JUMPING:
Agility
and Jumping Trials are open to any registered dog. The idea of the
trials is to test the speed and agility of the dog over a series of
jumps and obstacles. There are three levels, increasing in complexity:
Novice, Open, Masters. Trials are conducted by Obedience Clubs and some
Breed Clubs.
